Road-Tripping Along California’s Central Coast

In the geopolitics of the Golden State, Northern California and Southern California are two countries, necessarily but awkwardly bound. The north has Silicon Valley, grapevines, and Alice Waters; the south has Hollywood, citrus groves, and Wolfgang Puck. Between their respective capitals, San Francisco and Los Angeles, lies an expanse that at 75 miles per hour or at 30,000 feet can be hard to take in. ItÂ’s a stretch that seemingly contains nothing so much as a bothersome distance between here and there.
