JANNENE POST HOLIDAY INTERVIEW
NEW ZEALAND – NOVEMBER 2015
1 – WHERE DID YOU GO?
The South Island of New Zealand including, Queenstown, Te anau, Milford Sound, Lake Tekapo, Mt Cook & Christchurch
2- WHO WITH AND HOW LONG FOR?
I went with my husband Keith. ( lucky husband hey? ) We had 5 nights in Queenstown, 1 night Te anau, 2 Nights Tekapio and 1 night in Christchurch.
3- WHO DID YOU FLY WITH AND HOW WERE THEY?
We went over Jetstar direct to Queenstown. The flight was just over 2 hours I paid for exit row seating both ways. Well worth it for that little bit of extra leg room. (my husband is also 6ft 3) We came back Virgin from Christchurch, the flight was just over 3 hours . You can take your own food on board and you can buy tea and coffee on board. Both airlines were fine and the crew were pleasant.
4- WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT?
Coming in to land at Queenstown was quite spectacular as there was still a lot of snow on the mountain tops. The airport is small but the countryside surrounding the airport was quite green . I was impressed with Queenstown airport. I have never been to New Zealand. Because it was so close I always thought I would get there one day. The whole of the south Island was stunningly beautiful. I think the time of year also helped, with lots of snow still about and beautiful postcard blue glacier water
5 – WHAT WAS THE LOWLIGHT?
Christchurch. It was so sad to see this once thriving city struggling to stay afloat. Keith and Susie had been there pre earth quake. Keith was really shocked and couldn’t get over the damage. The beautiful cathedral in ruins, looking like a bomb had hit it and had burst into flame. They say a few buildings will be ready end of 2016 but they need at least another 10 – 15 years before they are on their feet again.
They have re established the shopping area called RESTART CITY. It is made up of shipping containers side by side and converted to shops. They have to keep going…. The city look like a war zone,. Except for the botanic gardens where the Rhododendrons were in full bloom and all the trees were in spring green. Quite refreshing compared to the city a mile or 2 away.
7 – WHERE WOULD YOU GO BACK TO?
All of it but maybe do the other side of Mount Cook
8 – TRAVELLING TIP POST HOLIDAY?
We were away for 8 nights and having just come back from 5 weeks in Europe with suitcases,we decided to go with a carry on bag each. I had some APT packing cells. Brilliant!!
I went away with 1 packing cell. With just 3 outfits. One on , one off and one spare.and it actually worked.!! Just having a carry on bag saved so much time at the airport on arrival in Melbourne.
Also I watched people struggle, through Europe and New Zealand with the security checks at the airports. Men with belts and lace up shoes wallets and keys getting very frustrated with having to place everything in the tray . Try to go without a belt and wear slip on shoes. I had on rubber soled shoes but I kept getting pulled up and had to take my shoes off. Jewelry is another problem for women… but you live and learn!!
