JANNENE POST HOLIDAY INTERVIEW
EUROPE – SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015
1 – WHERE DID YOU GO?
The South of France, Spain and a 14 day River cruise from Amsterdam to Arles.
2- WHO WITH AND HOW LONG FOR?
I met Keith (my husband) in Nice. He had gone earlier to Scotland & England to visit friends as he does each year for a month. We were away just on a month I left 25 September.
3- WHO DID YOU FLY WITH AND HOW WERE THEY?
I used my frequent flyer points and flew business class with Emirates on the way over. I visited my sister in Sydney on the way out so flew from Sydney to Dubai then onto Zurich. The Emirates A380 is a great aircraft and I do like their business class seats and service.
I had and overnight at Zurich airport then the next day flew down to Nice. The flight path was over the Swiss alps which was pretty special.
On the way paid to fly on Etihad Business Class from Paris to Abu Dhabi to Melbourne. The airport in Abu Dhabi is continually under construction( it is growing so fast). The transit from one flight to another was a bit hectic to say the least . When we arrived there were about 4 other flights arriving at the same time and we all had to go thru a security check at the same time, after that it all became quite civilized and orderly.
Etihads business class is also an excellent product and the chauffeur drive on both airlines are an added bonus.
4- WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT?
There were lots of highlights. We did Nice, Monaco, Aix en Provence, Carcassone, Barcelona and Madrid before flying op to Amsterdam to join the river cruise from Amsterdam to Arles.
The cruise took 14 days, it really is a brilliant way to travel. Very relaxing and I always say that unpacking once for 14 days is just the best!!
Before we left, our Robyn, suggested that I visit Montseraat whilst in Barcelona and Toledo when in Madrid. Both of these places, we would not have thought about but were definitely among the highlights. Keith took over 1500 photos!! So he was obviously impressed too!
After the cruise we caught a train directly to Charles de Gaulle Airport before heading home.. When we arrived at the airport in Paris we just went up the escalators and there we were right in the middle of the airport ready to check in, not sure if that was a highlight but i was impressed by the convenience!
5 – WHAT WAS THE LOWLIGHT?
There wasn’t really a low light. It was a bit of a hassle getting on and off trains, but fellow travellers were very helpful to us with our bags,
And whats a trip to Europe without being ripped off by a taxi driver??? (this one was in Marseilles)
7 – WHERE WOULD YOU GO BACK TO?
Im not sure that I would go back to any of the places I visited on this trip as there is still so much to see in the world.
Maybe Scandinavia next time?? We really really enjoyed it all and would not have changed a thing on the itinerary ( great travel agent)
8 – TRAVELLING TIP POST HOLIDAY?
I listened and looked at the weather pattern just the day before I left, and still got the packing wrong! I also packed too much again. That why I was so impressed with myself travelling around New Zealand. ( see New Zealand post)
Train travel in Europe is fantastic. Sometimes it is a little tense when you have a connecting train and the previous one is running late. This happened to us on about 3 occasions, but it all worked out. I organised from Nice to Amsterdam myself, ( independently) and it was an interesting exercise. But the time you added hotels, transfer to and from the hotels tours and food , not to mention not knowing where you are going….. I decided that a coach tour is the most economical way to travel. Having said that, coach touring isnt for everyone and you would need to find the right coach tour that suited you and gave you at least 2 – 3 nights in each place.
